TINGUELY FOUNTAIN In 1977 Jean Tinguely created sculptural machines in a shallow fountain where the stage of the old city theatre company once stood, and in the process gifted Basel a famous new landmark. The Swiss artist lined a shallow fountain with black asphalt and created inside mechanical figures powered by low-voltage current who appear to be playing in the water. These ten iron figures are in constant motion and conversation with each other - like the mime artists, actors and dancers that once occupied the stage that stood in this spot.
A very unique and interesting art display of a fountain, with several moving elements, all of which played with the water in a different way. I was very pleased to come across this fountain as I did not have the time to go to the Tinguely Museum, which I imagine would have hosted very similar moving art pieces.
There's an almost therapeutic calm in listening to the machines conduct their symphony of splashes. Visiting here in the early evening after the sun has left allows you to experience whacky machine silhouettes with the fountain lit up by lights protruding from the water. It's an ideal time given you are likely to be able to be alone with your thoughts and only the odd passerby.
Especially the small one all by itself is cute
It is somewhat interesting and highly original. Visit it if it's on your way
Carnival Fountain is made of iron and it's cool art and design. It's a nice spot to sit, relax and enjoy. After visiting the city and sites you can sit here and enjoy the beautiful fountain and people. There is nearby restaurant as well. It's a nice spot in the beautiful city of Basel.
The fountains are quite nice and are a great work of art. The downside is that the fountains are just for observation and not something that you can really interact with (unlike some art at the Tinguley Museum).
