The neo-classical style La Pastorale villa, originally belonging to the Genevan writer and historian, Eugène de Budé, was built between 1831 and 1835. Since the death of the writer in 1910 the villa had belonged to different owners until it was donated to the City of Geneva by its last owner on the premises that the sequoia trees planted on the grounds of the villa would be preserved. Since then the grounds were chopped into patches of land that were sold to the Korean and Canada embassies. Not sure about the original sequoia trees though, as there are not that many trees left on the ground. However, there are two or three ancient looking trees that can be the sequoia in question. The villa itself is not in a very good state and is in need of renovation. Perhaps the Press Club and the Geneva Welcome Centre that it houses used it quite a lot hence the state. Another guess I have that the Swiss are better at renovating and keeping in tact more simple buildings like barns or sheds or storage houses. There are two such buildings on the grounds which have been recently renovated. Inside the building that was once a horse stable one can see the stone basins with big iron rings attached to their sides. Presumably, horses were fed from them. During the renovation the basins were quite cleverly turned into desks with glass tops - now visitors feed their minds at them. The small park that surrounds the villa is open to public. There is also a wonderful view opening up from the front of the villa facing the lake. Once you could have an unobstructed view of Mont Blanc as you entered the main door into the villa as the hall would extend right through the building into the sitting room with panoramic windows. A feature that was very common in 19th century when villas were built with the nature and views in mind. Right now the view is partial due to some building towering in the distance. By the restored barn and the stables you can also see the original gate of the estate.
