Alte Brennerei is the local brewery in the small hilly town of Nuglar. It produces very tasty beer and the brewpub restaurant serves delicious Swiss and German cuisine. If you decide to visit on a Saturday, making a reservation is recommended, as the small place can fill up. (Also note, they are closed during the month of February for winter.) The 4-story building feels like a renovated farmhouse and actually has a small pig pen in the basement. The lucky pigs receive spent grain from the brewery, and likely some scraps from the restaurant as well. You can park along the street and walk up to the main level entrance. Outside are a few tables and benches on a gravel patio. Just inside is a lounge area and ahead on the left is the brewery itself. There are midsize copper brewing vessels and stainless steel tanks. The label for their house beer is Schwarzbuebe Bier, an homage to the name of this local region, and the brewery logo is a man’s black silhouette. Martin, the brewmaster chef owner has been making beer since 2007, and has built a very enjoyable brewpub. On the right is the bar and dining room with dining tables handcrafted from salvaged timber. The floor is wood tile and the white walls are decorated with pictures of herbs and boars, and the place is decorated with a few boar carvings as well. The short bar has 4 stools and a stainless steel tap tower, and overlooks the open kitchen. They serve delicious salad with unique house made dressing, sausage dishes, exquisite beer cheese fondue, and a variety of additional dishes. They have 4 house beers on tap, which are available by glass, sampler flight, or bottle. They also sell a distilled version of their beer, which is better than any Hop Schnapps I’ve ever had before. Excellent food, great drinks, and neighborly service make this a relaxing and enjoyable establishment, most definitely worth a visit.
