This monument is extraordinary by virtue of its function, its architecture and its decor. An absolute artistic masterpiece, it is also a unique place that unites art and spirituality. Built in 1908-1909, it is a subtle composition that suggests that the funeral procession takes a symbolic route by which the time for tears follows that of taking leave, and concludes by evoking the \triumph of life\. The rich, omnipresent decor - created between 1909 and 1910 by the pupils of the School of Art in collaboration with their professor, Charles L'Eplattenier - consists of stone, embossed metal, mosaic and painting. It depicts stylised flora and fauna, and flames and mists. A striking example of Art Nouveau in Switzerland, this building still serves as a crematorium and a columbarium. When visiting, please respect the deceased by remaining silent. Interested visitors will take advantage of the opportunity to discover the paths through the cemetery, and notably in the area beside the crematorium where they will see gravestones inspired by Art Nouveau designs.
