We first went to this event when it was just wine tasting. The concept is simple: you buy a ticket, you go to different wine stan and sample the wine. You can buy some or not. The big bummer is the wine sellers don’t generally sell just one bottle you need to order 6 bottles at least. Only a few wine sellers can sell you one bottle at the time which is silly really. Also It’s ok if you really enjoy the wine but clearly you can’t buy 6 bottles at every tasting. Especially when the wine is just ok. The first time went well, we enjoyed ourselves and ended up buying 12 bottles. The second week we came back with family members when it was food and beer tastings too. You pay for the food and the beers. Well it was a rather unpleasant experience. The wine sellers were either forcing you to buy the wine or wouldn’t serve you at all. We were told by the French wine sellers (grand crus de France) that he had no open bottles for us and that if we wanted to taste the wine we needed to buy. The guy was truly arrogant and rude. The Swiss wine sellers weren’t much friendlier. We got told by one very patriarchal guy that he couldn’t sell us one bottle because young people buy one bottle and go drink it outside (mind you, we are in our mid-30’s and were with family members who are in their 60’s). One seller told us literally to move over so he could serve other people that may have look more affluent? God knows. Honestly, it was a big disappointment. We understand that wine sellers want to sell but this is the concept: you buy your ticket, taste the wine and if you like it, you can buy it. You shouldn’t be forced to buy 6 bottles everywhere. Thanks again for being so rude, we won’t be back. However we found that wine stands run by younger people or women were generally super friendly especially the Basel ones. This is where we ended buying all the wine.
