We took a guided tour through the power plant. I have lived in Zurich for 3.5 years and this was one of my absolute favorite activities! The guide was a highly enthusiastic, patient, and knowledgeable person who knows how to give a tour. We were allowed to climb down a ladder into the damn to look at the fish - ladder. Unfortunately, there were no large fish in there today, but only small ones and a few squirting mussels. The power plant itself is in beautifully renovated and there are tons of things to look at, try out, learn - and once they are done with rebuilding the turbines from 1898 to working condition (!!) by the end of 2017, there will be even more to see in action! We were a group of adults, but the tour is very well balanced and addresses both kids and adults by meeting them at different levels of detail. The only potential downside is that the tour is offered in German only, but by speaking slowly, both the guide and the audio-visual experiences were enjoyable for the people in our group who don't have German as their native language!

Das Kraftwerk Höngg ist ein hübsches, kleines Flusskraftwerk (Laufwasserkraftwerk) auf der Werdinsel in Höngg (Stadt Zürich). Bis 1973 hiess das Kraftwerk \Am Giessen\. Es wurde 1893 von Robert Waser zur Stromversorgung seiner \Werdmühle\ beim Bahnhof in Zürich-Altstetten als privates Wasserkraftwerk an der Limmat errichtet und gehört seit 1973 dem Elektrizitätswerk der Stadt Zürich (EWZ). Die Turbine hat eine nutzbare Leistung von 1,2 MW und erzeugt damit 8 Gigawattstunden (GWh) im Jahr. Zum Vergleich: Der durchschnittliche Stromverbrauch der Stadt Zürich liegt bei rund 3000 GWh im Jahr. Somit trägt das Kraftwerk Höngg circa 0.27 Prozent des jährlichen Stromverbrauchs der Stadt Zürich. Im Jahr 2018 verbrauchte ein Schweizer im Durchschnitt rund 6,77 Megawattstunden (MWh) Strom. Also versorgt das Höngger Kraftwerk 1182 Schweizer mit Strom.
