The original Royal houses of Europe derived from respected community leaders and had the well being of their communities and people in mind. Community leaders and religion had similar objectives and this sometimes created conflicts. It took tumultuous centuries before religion and leadership found ways of cooperating or merging. But as power tends to corrupt, this ultimately resulted in the age of revolutions (1780's to 1850's) with the Spring of Nations effectively reducing or abolishing the power of the monarchies. Although it would take until after the second world war before this became settled into today's mostly constitutional monarchies, with absolute monarchies being rare. Like the House of Habsburg, many present day Royal descendants and houses have found alternative means to contributing to their communities. Most live a (private) life very similar to yours. Still, due to our romantic view on history and our culture they are often respected and admired by society. With such respect comes responsibility. Unlike the other Austrian maternal lineage Imperial House of Habsburg-Lorraine, branch members of present day Royal House of Habsburg have not held power since the 17th century. This branch of the family has been quietly living in present day Europe and on three other continents. The chance of meeting an original Habsburg is less likely than a Habsburg-Lorraine. Although it may be confusing as these often drop the Lorraine part of their name, ask! The original Royal House of Habsburg survives through the Spanish paternal line of Charles V and his recognized son Juan de Austria. The titles of the present day Royal House of Habsburg members are hereditary titles.
